"I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God
who is sending a love letter to the world." ~Mother Teresa

New Self

Isaiah 45:11-50:11
These chapters contain several different things.  The greatness of God is talked about.  His destroying of idols is mentioned.  The fact that things will not go well for Babylon is made clear.  And the Lord makes it clear that He will restore Israel and bring salvation to those who choose righteousness.  God still sees their sin, but recognizes their obedience.

Psalm 69: 1-18
David has been experiencing trials that make him feel like his life is threatened... like things might not get better.  He is asking God to save him.  To extend His steadfast love and mercy, but at His appointed time.  David is trusting that God will rescue him when the time is right.  I think I could use some of that patience!

Proverbs 24:3-6
Wisdom, understanding, knowledge, wise guidance, and abundance of counselors lead to establishment, pleasant riches, strength, might, and victory.  I think the first list is well worth seeking.  And we know that these are all characteristics of God.  He provides all!

Ephesians 4
This chapter is about unity in the Body.  We have all been called to one hope, but each has a different talent/function for building up the body.  The idea is that all these parts are able to work together in love and that the result is growth of the Body.  Paul is reminding the Ephesians that now that they belong to Christ they must put off the old things and put on the new self so that they are like God.  He gives them specific things that they should do.

Kazakhstan-
Diverse population with an economy that is undergoing a boom.  Natural resources have made this one of the world's fastest growing economies.  Pray that the wealth would be distributed to all citizens.  Most in the country are Muslim, with much Muslim evangelization going on.  Christians are restricted and sometimes persecuted.  Pray for media ministries such as literature distribution and the use of radio, to reach many in the country.

Ephesians 2
A lot of times I have trouble focusing when I am doing my Bible study time.  Today is particularly bad.  And last night after women's group I was so excited to spend time with the Lord.  (I still am, by the way!)  So, I'm having a really hard time getting through the passage and then I come across these verses:  "For by grace you have been saved through faith.  It is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."  Familiar words, right?  Well, today what they said to me was that my salvation and love from God has nothing to do with what I can do to justify myself.  It would not matter if I did not make it all the way through this year of radical living of Bible study and prayer, because it does not save me.  Is it good and bringing me closer to God?  Yes.  But it is not required of me.  I have no requirements other than to have faith and receive God's grace.  Let me boast in You, Lord!!

Psalm 67
"May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us."  I think many people pray like this... whether they believe in God or have a personal relationship with Him or not.  But what is our motivation in this type of prayer?  Is it so that we can have a good life?  So we can be prosperous?  Or any number of other selfish motivators?  What I didn't include, though, is the correct punctuation in this verse, because, you see, there is not a period at the end of this statement but rather a comma.  Here's what comes after it.  ", that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations."  That's where the period really should be.  Oh, that we would grasp this mindset and make it our own.  Lord, teach me to live outside of myself so I can see how to make You known to all.

Proverbs 23:29-35
These verses talk about the effects of wine (alcohol) in excess.  One who is addicted to wine will have woes, sorrow, complaining, wounds, and redness of eye.

Isaiah 41:17-43:13
Ok, this one was a little confusing for me.  It kept going back and forth between God will take care of His people, and the people get into a bad place so the Lord has to lead them out.  I suppose that is all of Israel's story, though.  And it is so much like my own that I love reading about how God takes care of His people in spite of themselves.

Practicing the Presence of God

We come into the presence of the Lord by spending time in His Word.  I have been challenged a lot by the women in my Bible study lately to make these times of reading Scripture more meaningful.  I want to learn to pray the Word as I read it and meditate on it... to fully listen to God- to take the time to listen.  Lord, here I am.  I want to hear from You!

Isaiah 39-41:16
Hezekiah is told that one day the Babylonians will come and take all his possessions, including some of his sons, but he doesn't mind because he figures it won't be during his time.  What a stand-up guy.  (hint of sarcasm)  Then God begins to speak comfort to His people.  He talks about revealing His glory.  He talks about His greatness and all the things He has done and will do.  Then He tells the people to not fear because He will take care of all those who come against them.  Isaiah uses his really beautiful language in these passages.

Psalm 66
This is a psalm of praise that is basically thanksgiving to the Lord.  The writer says that he has been tested, but that God has brought him through his trials to a place of abundance.  He encourages us to "Say to God, 'How awesome are your deeds!  So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.  All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.'"  Go ahead... say it!  Tell the Lord how awesome He is.  I love that the beginning of my blog was about me wanting to pray scripture more and the psalm for today very bluntly tells me what to say!  God is so cool.

Proverbs 23:25-28
These verses encourage children to please their parents.  The father is also giving a little advice about avoiding certain kind of women.  I'm pretty sure if he avoided those kind of women, his parents would have been pleased!

Ephesians 1
Paul greets the Ephesians and then talks about how they were all chosen and predestined for adoption as sons through Jesus.  This is something I have wondered about before and don't know if it literally means that only certain people have been/will be chosen to enter the Kingdom of God and all others are lost.  As I read it just now, another thought occurred to me.  Perhaps we have all been predestined for adoption- God loves all His creation and wants a relationship will all of us, right?  So, maybe by the fact that He spent His time creating us, that means He chose us, or predestined us to belong to Him.  BUT, we don't all choose Him.  I truly believe He allows us to choose, because I know I belong to Him, but I'm not perfect because I've received salvation and don't always choose the His way as I live day to day. Anyhow... Paul then goes on to pray for the Ephesians that that would have a "spirit of wisdom and revelation" to fully understand all that Jesus Christ is.  That's a pretty big prayer!

Jordan-
This country lies on the eastern bank of the Jordan river.  There is a big mix of people groups there, with Palestinians being the largest group.  They suffer from the turmoil around them in the Middle East, which effects their economy and politics.  Poverty and unemployment are serious issues.  Islam is the state religion, but others are free to exercise religious beliefs.  The Church is visible and known in the country.

Let Us Not Grow Weary Of Doing Good

Japan-
More and more people are searching for truth as they face an uncertain future, which can lead them to Christ.  Ministry in the country has begun to be more culturally relevant, and therefore, more effective.  Some of the crises that Japan are facing include no moral compass, suicide epidemic, unstable government leaders, an aging population, and increasing crime rates.  The Church is really not experiencing much growth and has little effect on society.  Many cities, towns, and villages have no church at all.  Media has great outreach effect with the country being so technologically advanced.

Ephesians 6
Paul closes out the book by reminding the believers to test their own works and not worry about what other people do, so that they may boast in what God has done for them alone.  He also tells them to share what they have learned so that in due season they may reap a harvest.  He tells them again in the end that is does not matter whether they are circumcised or not, and they should not listen and follow people who are so concerned about it.

Proverbs 23:24
"The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him."  Do you identify with the parent or child in this verse... or both?!

Psalm 65
"Praise is due to you..."  This is how the psalm starts and then David goes on to list some of the works of God and how He shows Himself and provides for us.

Isaiah 37-38
Hezekiah is the king of Judah right now and is being attacked by the king of Assyria.  He prays to the Lord for deliverance, and God answers through Isaiah.  He tells Hezekiah that the Assyrians will not be victorious and then when he grows sick, that his time on earth will be extended.  He got well after Isaiah instructed his care takers to put a cake of figs on his ailment.

Day 261

I have been at this for quite a while.  261 days!  I am so glad to be reading through the Bible.  It is hard on some days, but I love getting to spend time in the Word.  This has been a really full weekend, and I have plenty to do this week as well.  I can't believe how quickly summer is falling away.

Isaiah 32-36
There is quite a bit of back and forth here.  It will talk about the destruction of a place and how the Lord plans to remover sin, then it will talk about how the Lord will restore those places as well.

Psalm 63 & 64
In my Bible these have the headings "My Soul Thirsts For You" and "Hide Me From The Wicked."  63 talks about our longings for the Lord and how He satisfies us, and 64 talks about asking for help and receiving the power of the Lord against enemies.

Proverbs 23:22-23
Listen to your parents.  Buy truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding, and don't give it away!

Galatians 5
What an excellent chapter!  Paul is reminding the Galatians that Christ has set them free.  This does not mean they must keep the law to be saved... it no longer matters whether or not they (or we) are circumcised.  We are only saved by faith.  He tells them that they were doing so well in their walk with Christ, and is now wondering what has happened.  He asks who has hindered them.  He tells them that the law is now summed up with "love your neighbor as yourself."  Then he goes on to say that we are to walk by the Spirit and not by the flesh.  He lists the works of the flesh and then the fruits of the Spirit.  (This makes me want to sing a song from my childhood!)  "Those who belong to Jesus Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."  Thank you, Jesus for taking fleshly passions and desire and becoming my only true passion and deep desire!

Japan-
Had a really great economic boom, and then a bit of a recession.  They were also effected by the 2008-2009 world-wide recession.  Freedom of religion is guaranteed.  They are mostly nonpracticing of any type of religion, but the culture revolves a lot around Shintoism.

Falling In Love With God

On Wednesday nights, I am involved in a women's Bible study that is simply wonderful.  The girls who attend come with the purpose of going deep into the Word and learning more and more about our God.  Recently we have been talking about the subject of falling in love with God.  What we are working on this week is really practicing the presence of God.  How do we do that?  It begins with Scripture!  Spending time reading the Word, praying the Word, meditating on the Word, letting it lead you into worship.  And we must be willing to wait on the Lord... we have to devote time to this process.  So, join me, and get in the presence of God!

Psalm 60
David is writing today about a time when the Lord did not seem to be fighting for them.  They felt rejected.  And David knew that the only way they would have success was by the will of the Lord when He fought for them.  David is asking for help.

Proverbs 23:15-16
When a son is wise and speaks what is right, it makes his father glad.  The verse says the father's "inmost being will exult,"but the foot note says that another translation of that might be "my kidneys."  :)

Isaiah 22-24
Isaiah speaks about Jerusalem today.  I do not always understand quite what he is trying to say.  There is definitely destructive language in the first part of this speech, but then it says that Eliakim will be given much authority in Jerusalem and that he will be like a secure peg where much honor is hung.  Then it says that the peg will give way and be cut down and all it holds will fall.  He also speaks about Tyre and then the whole earth, neither of which have a very good outlook.  I am wondering what the resolution of this book will be.  So far, there has been a very bleak outlook for everyone.

Galatians 2:17-3:9
Paul is continuing with the theme of being saved by faith, not works.  Specifically he is saying that we are not saved by the law.  If it were the law that brought righteousness, Jesus' death was for nothing... but that is not the case.  All are able to receive salvation through faith!

Israel
It is likely that Israel now has the largest Jewish population in the world, which was not so until recently.  Pray that Jews would come to understand the gospel as the fulfillment of their heritage.  The many different people groups in Israel have different feelings about seeing Jesus as the Messiah.  Some are from other religions, and some do not engage in religion.  There are still 8 million Jews dispersed around the world.  Most are in the US.  Pray that they would come to know Christ and ministry to them would be effective.

Discipline Styles

Isaiah 19-21
Today Isaiah gives an oracle concerning Egypt.  He says that the Nile will dry up and that Egypt will "stagger in all its deeds, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit."  But he also says there will be five cities whose allegiances lie with the Lord and they will cry to the Lord and He will deliver them.  Not only them, but Assyria and Israel, too.  But the Lord also told Isaiah to remove his shoes and sackcloth, so he wandered around naked for three years as a sign to Egypt and Cush that they would suffer the same fate.  He also speaks about Babylon today and says that it will fall.

Psalm 59
This is a prayer for deliverance from enemies.

Proverbs 23:13-14
Discipline for children- if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.  If you strike him with a rod, you will save him from Sheol.  I think that's pretty clear.

Galatians 2:1-16
Paul is telling the Galatians more of his story- the places he went and people he was with.  He says that he told the same message to everyone, whether they were influential or not.  But then he had a little run in with Peter.  He called Peter a hypocrite, saying that he acted like a Gentile even though he was a Jew, but expected the Gentiles to act as Jews.  Then he goes on to say that Jew and Gentile do not matter because salvation does not come through the law, but through faith.

Israel-
This past Sunday we had a guest pastor at our church who happens to be of Jewish descent.  He spoke about the peace of Jerusalem and the current state of Israel.  Israel was only founded in 1948, ending 1,900 years of exile for the Jews.  Since then, there have been many wars and lots of different countries inserting their opinions into what actually belongs to Israel.  It is a prosperous state, with many opportunities, but is having to deal with the growing cost of immigrants and a growing lack of water.  All religions are free to minister within their own communities and Jew who claim Jesus as Messiah have recently been able to be recognized as religious entities.  Praise the Lord for increased interest in the gospel.

Are You Sure That's English?

Galatians 1
Paul greets the churches in Galatia.  He is not writing to just one group, but all the churches in the city.  I imagine they had to pass it around so everyone could read it.  I also think this was a brilliant strategy for increasing unity among believers belonging to different churches!  Then, he begins telling them that he is disappointed in them because they have listened to and turned to a different gospel.  He reminds them that there is only one true gospel.  Then he tells them how it was not taught to him, but revealed to him through Jesus.

Proverbs 23:12
"Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge. "  A lot of time I read these proverbs and don't spend much time thinking about their application.  I know that instruction and knowledge are good, but this is telling me to apply myself... meaning I need to work at it!

Psalm 58
David is asking the Lord to do some very specific things to his enemies.

Isaiah 15-18
Isaiah is speaking to specific places now.  He talked about Moab, whose glory would be brought into contempt.  He talked about Damascus, whose strong cities would be like deserted places of wooded heights and hilltops. He talked about Cush, who would bring a tribute to the Lord.

Ireland-
People speak both Irish and English, but there are no monolingual Irish speakers.  And even though they are speaking English, we still might not be able to understand them!  The economy has done very well in the last several years due to a switch to high tech industry and services rather than dairy farming and tourism.  There was a financial crisis in 2008-2009 that has slowed down the economy.  The Catholic church is influential, but not as much as in the past.  There is freedom of religion.  The Holy Spirit has moved through the country and transformed rigid religion into spiritually dynamic fellowships!  Pray for all the changes that come from rapid transformation.  There are many immigrants coming into the country who bring cultural diversity.  Pray that they would come to know Christ.  This is considered a young country... pray for the young people to have life changing encounters with Christ.  Pray for the many missionary workers.

Sleepy Monday

Iraq-
A country full of violent and traumatic history.  There have been improvements in the form of government, but Iraq is still considered one of the most corrupt nations in the world.  Pray for the elimination of corruption.  Many people have endured suffering, including women, children, Christians, and other religious minorities.  The number of the Christian community that has been in Iraq since the 1st century has declined drastically due to persecution and harassment.  There are growing numbers of people converting from Islam, but it is not nearly enough to make up for those who have left.  Most people groups are unreached.  Pray for the ministry of Christian literature that has a great start and just needs to be published in more dialects.

Isaiah 12-14
Isaiah is spending more time going back and forth between what will happen to those who have fallen away and those who are righteous.  I know which group I want to belong in!  I hope Christ will be able to look at me and be pleased!

Psalm 57
David is crying for mercy from the Lord.  He declares the greatness of God and says that his heart is steadfast.  How I long for a steadfast heart!  But I am so quick to forget or choose to do things myself.  Father, teach me to be steadfast like you are steadfast!

Proverbs 23:9-11
Don't waste your breath with a fool.  Don't take what doesn't belong to you because the Lord avenges.

2 Corinthians 13
Paul tells them he is coming and that he wants to find them "living correctly."  It is good for us to be weak because Christ is not weak.  He also says to examine yourself and make sure you are living in a manner worthy of Jesus Christ.

Weakness = Power

Iran-
There are so many things to pray for.  The Islamic Revolution has not lived up to the promises it made and instead it has produced much bloodshed, cruelty extremism, and economic deprivation.  Pray for a government that offers justice and safety.  Religious persecution is targeted at several minorities, Christians being one... especially Muslim background Christians.  The revolution has led to church growth, even though many of those churches meet in secret.  Pray for jobs and income for believers who are discriminated against, courage in the face of persecution, and protection for believers.  Young people are very responsive to the gospel and make up a large percentage of the underground church.  There are several very large people groups that are not evangelized.  And TV ministry is a great tool for outreach.  Pray for the development of more programs.

Isaiah 8-9
Isaiah is telling the people all the things that are going to happen to them.  Not pleasant things.  He is talking about the people not following the Lord and how they will be broken and shattered.  Chapter 9 also includes the well known scripture that says "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given..."  This child is to uphold the government and bring peace.  He will establish righteousness and justice.  Any guesses who this might be?!  :)

2 Corinthians 12:1-10
Paul is still boasting.  And he says he has the right to, but he doesn't want to boast on his own behalf too much so that no one thinks too much of him.  He goes on to say that to keep him from becoming conceited, a messenger of Satan came to harass him.  He pleaded with the Lord take it away, but the Lord said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."  Paul then says he will boast only of his weaknesses so that the power of Christ can be displayed.  Wouldn't it be nice if we learned to be content in our weaknesses so that Christ could show himself to us and others.

Psalm 55
David is asking the Lord for mercy and talking about being taunted, then we find out it is not an enemy, but someone who is close to him, his companion.  I think this is something most people can relate to- feeling betrayed by a friend.  Then he says that God is the one who will deal with the betrayer.  Hopefully we will remember to let the Lord fight for us, and not try to do it on our own.

Proverbs 23:4-5
We are not to desire what those who are rich may have.  We should not toil to gain wealth because it can sprout wings and be gone suddenly.

Iran-
Most of the information provided in the Operation World book is from recent years.  I know there is much history in this country, but so many things have happened recently, that they are focused on.  Oil and natural gas make the country very wealthy, but there are inefficiencies in the industry and corruption politically that undermine profitability.  Unemployment is very high due to rapid urbanization and population growth.  In 1979 a theocratic Islamic Republic was declared.  Then Iraq invaded, led by Saddam Hussein.  All these things led to presidential elections in 1997.  After the 2009 elections, there were intense anti-government demonstrations, with a ruthless response from the government.  The people of Iran are united by one thing- the belief in the right to, and desire to create nuclear power.  Shi'a and Sunni Islam are the two main religions followed.  Some minorities are recognized by the constitution, but many are not.  People are not satisfied with the Islamic way of war, government, and lack of freedom.  This makes them open to the gospel!  Pray that those hungry for true spirituality would be able to hear the gospel.  There has been much growth in ministry to the Iranians.

2 Corinthians 11:1-15
Today, Paul is speaking to the Corinthians about people who speak to them, but are not true apostles of Christ.  He says they sound good, but he does not consider himself inferior to them, even though he is unskilled in speaking because his skill is in knowledge.  He has been sustained by various churched that have supplied his need, not by charing for his preaching... which makes me think that the others are charging them!  He continues to speak out against theses false apostles because they are deceptive.  Paul says that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, and so his servants disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.  There are still people around today who claim to bring good news, but we must be careful to measure what they say against the Word of God rather than just listening to what we want to hear.

Proverbs 22:28-29
We should regard the things taught to us from our fathers before us.
"Do you see a man skillful in his work?  He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men."

Psalm 53
Sometimes is seems like everyone around us has fallen away, like all are corrupt, like they work evil.  But salvation will come from Zion, God will restore His people!

Isaiah 3-5
Wow.  Isaiah really knows how to use his words!  I am captivated reading what he spoke.  These chapters talks about the judgement of Judah.  He tells them very bluntly and boldly all the things they will have to answer for.  Here is just a little portion.
"For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it.  Woe to them!  For they have brought evil on themselves.  Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.  Woe to the wicked!  It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him."  Isaiah uses his beautiful words to describe the way the Lord will take care of those who have chosen Him.  "There will be a booth for shade by day from the heat, and for a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain."  This section is relatively short, though, because he returns to the woes that will befall the people.

Tell It Like It Is

Isaiah 1-2
I really like the book of Isaiah, but normally just read a few verses here and there, so I am excited to read through the whole book.  Isaiah is a prophet who literally speaks on behalf of God.  In these first couple of chapters, Isaiah would speak what God told him to, and then give some commentary about his own thoughts.  Basically, we are reading that Judah has not followed God like they should have.  He is speaking about the things they have done to displease the Lord.  God speaks about how He will avenge and restore the city, and then Isaiah finishes us by talking about the day of the Lord and says, "and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day."

Psalm 52
Mighty men boast of evil and destruction and lying and deceit, but God's steadfast love endures all day and He will break down the mighty forever.

Proverbs 22:26-27
Do not try to buy things you cannot pay for.

2 Corinthians 10
Paul is talking a lot about the way he acts when he is with people as compared to the way he writes to them.  He says his letters are much more bold than he would like to be in person.  He speaks about some people not understanding that they do not walk according to the flesh.  "Our weapons of warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds." v. 4  He goes on to say that we have the ability to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.  These verses changed my life a little over a year ago.  I finally understood that my biggest battlefield is in my mind with the thoughts I have.  Once we are able to recognize the lies that Satan feeds us, we are told we have divine power to take those thoughts captive!  This is great news!  We know Truth!  Paul then goes on to talk about all the boasting that he does, and ends with "let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord." v. 17

Indonesia-
Maluku- In 1999-2000 there was an Islamist jihad against all Christians resulting in 500,000 refugees and 20,000 killed.  Peace has been restored and nearly all groups are working toward maintaining that peace.  The majority is Muslim and little evangelized.
Papua- Western half of the Papua New Guinea island.  Over the last 100 years, a majority of the tribes have come to Christ.  Of these, over 90% are Christian!  The need for strong, mature leaders centered on the Bible is essential in dealing with the challenges of Papua society.  Travel is very difficult due to the rough terrain, so there are high aviation needs.  Migrants are entering the island at very high rates and taking over in many different areas of life.  Pray that Christians would witness to them and the country will continue to love God.

Indonesia-
Kalimantan- This island is mostly Muslim, but Christian growth is seen.  However, there is not a clear break from the spirit world.  There are very large unreached people groups, some with a history that is hard to get over.
Sulawesi- Very diverse island, which leads to many languages not having a Bible translation.  There is much work being done to get more translations.  This island also has a long history of Christianity and although they are a minority, they are a large minority is some areas.

Song of Solomon 5-8
I am loving this book.  Well,  I guess technically I loved it since I finished it.  In today's reading, the lovers are telling one another what they love about each other.  And while we may not feel like a man telling us that our teeth are like a flock of ewes is much of a compliment, her beloved knew all parts of her and found them desirable... and he told her!  What's important is that she listened and believed him.  She says, "I am my beloved's, and his desire is for me."  This part is easy for me to make the connection to Christ and the church.  So many times when we hear good things about ourselves we are slow to believe them.  This includes how much the Lord loves us.  He tells us over and over again in His word, but do we listen and believe him?  The beloved tells his lover over and over again how beautiful she is.  Do you believe that the King is enthralled with your beauty?  It's true!!  She also gives a pretty good description of him with his cheeks like beds of spices and legs like alabaster columns.  I'm wondering what kind of modern comparisons we would use now...

Psalm 51
Selected verses:
"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love...wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow... create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me... restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinner will return to you... O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise."

Proverbs 22:24-25
Do not associate with angry or wrathful men.

2 Corinthians 9
The first part of this chapter is a little funny to me because Paul is telling the people how much he has bragged about them and had confidence in speaking about them.  Now there are some people coming to see them and he is just making sure they know how highly he has spoken of them so that they don't disappoint anyone.  Hehe!  The second part of this chapter talks about giving.  We reap what we sow.  We must decide in our hearts what we should give, but we should only give with the right motives- not reluctantly or under compulsion.  Give cheerfully, for God provides all that is needed, and He is generous.  And when we give, it will produce thanksgiving to God... in us and in others as they see and hear our confession of the gospel.

Too Blessed

This weekend, Tim and I went to Snyder and had a lovely wedding shower thrown for us.  The ladies who put it together made everything look so beautiful and we felt truly special.  And after all the dust had cleared from all the events revolving around the wedding, we have come to realized that people have been so generous toward us and we are truly in need of nothing.  I know that we have been blessed extensively by so many people... in fact, I feel like I have been too blessed!  We are so grateful for the love and support that has been shown to us.

Song of Solomon 1-4
I have heard two interpretations of this book.  One is that this is a description of love between a man and a woman who are getting married.  The other it that this is a metaphor for Christ and His bride, the Church.  I understand that we are the bride of Christ, but the language used in this book does not seem to fit that description to me.  The two people (the man and the woman) speaking to each other in this book talk of their admiration and affections for each other with very specific language about appearance and longing.  It is beautifully written and shows how wonderful love can be in the bounds of marriage.

2 Corinthians 8:16-24
Paul is sending Titus to Corinth and lets them know he is coming.  But not only does he tell them Titus is on his way, but Paul speaks very highly of him.  It must have been so encouraging for Titus to hear that Paul saw good things in him.  I know when someone I respect and see as an example (especially spiritually) has something good to say about me, I am so thankful to hear that they can see Christ working in me!

Psalm 50
God does not desire physical sacrifices because the whole earth and everything in it are His.  He does not tell us if He is hungry, because he does not need us to feed him.  What he desires is a sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Proverbs 22:22-23
The Lord will take care of the poor.

The West is largely Muslim.  There are two churches on the island, but young people do not participate because they must be Muslim to marry.  The East is largely Christian, but has influences that keep the people from truly experiencing the love and power of Jesus.

Dwelling Place

Indonesia- Island of Sumatra
This island is one of the biggest in the country and the 6th largest in the world.  They do have good natural resources, but exploitation is common.  Because of it's location, the island is prone to natural disasters and has had to recover from extensive damage.  There are many unevangelized here, but Christianity is strong among former animists.  The Chinese also have a large population here and have great potential for receiving and spreading the gospel.

Ecclesiastes 4-6
Solomon is continuing his thoughts about so many things being worthless.  Today he says that to be alone and toil for no one is meaningless... that two are better than one.  He warns against making promises to God that you do not intend to keep... you should fear the Lord.  And he talks about the worthlessness of wealth... it is vanity and a chasing after the wind.

Psalm 47
"Clap your hands, shout to God with songs of joy!  Sing praises, sing praises, sing praises!  God is the king, God reigns, sing praises!" Maybe more of my own paraphrase than a direct quote.  :)

Proverbs 22:16
"Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty."

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7
We are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.  I guess I had only ever thought of this in the dating/marriage relationship, but the Word doesn't actually specify that.  It just tells us not to tie ourselves to people that oppose us.  In the same with that light and darkness, or righteousness and lawlessness do not mix (think oil and water) we do not mix with unbelievers.  For we have become the temple of God.  When Jesus made a way for us to get to God, we became His dwelling place, no longer a room in a building.  Paul goes on to described some afflictions that he has endured, but states that he is joyful because of the report he has heard about the Corinthians.

Turn, Turn, Turn

2 Corinthians 6:1-13
Paul is talking about not putting an obstacle in front of anyone, but commending themselves in every way as servants of God.  Some of the things in his list are endurance of several kinds of hardships, purity and other virtues, and opposing ideas such as honor and dishonor, and slander and praise.  He tells the Corinthians that he has spoken with an open heart and that they are limiting themselves by not opening their hearts.

Proverbs 22:15
"Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him."

Psalm 46
"God is our refuge and strength,
a very present (well proved) help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved
into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and farm,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
... Be still and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!"

Ecclesiastes 1-3
This book was written by Solomon, son of David, king of Israel.  We know from earlier reading that he was very wise, and this book is him writing about his search for wisdom.  He basically starts out by saying that everything is vanity.  There is no need to toil for anything, because in the end it will just be left for someone else and is simply a "striving after the wind."  He says that with wisdom comes vexation and with knowledge come sorrow.  Solomon questions why we toil so hard for things and suggests that there is nothing better than for a man to enjoy his toil.  He then speaks about a time for everything (the same thing The Byrds made popular in 1965).  Then Solomon reiterates a couple of times that it is a gift from God to enjoy your work, to take pleasure in your toil.

Job Restored

Indonesia-
What a place!  This is a group of over 17,000 islands spread out over 10 million km of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.  I don't think I can fully comprehend how big and wide spread that it!  There are more than 750 people groups spread across the country.  The economy is diverse, ranging from areas of growth to areas of poverty.  The government requires everyone to adhere to one of six recognized religions.  There has been sustained growth of the church over the last several years.  Some areas needing prayer are the mass displacement of people, the rise of Islam in the country- usually through violence, and the need for mature spiritual leaders.

Job 37-42
Elihu is continuing his speech about the majesty of God and then the Lord Himself speaks to Job.  He questions Job asking who has accomplished all kinds of things, but Job says that he has already talked too much and will not make an answer.  Then the Lord goes on further to ask Job more questions about who has accomplished great and mighty works, and this time Job says to God that He can do all things, that he (Job) had spoken too much, and that now he had not only heard about God, but had seen Him with his own eyes.  Then God rebukes Job's friends and restores Job to everything he had lost.

Psalm 45
This psalm seems to switch who it was written for pretty often.  It was written for the king, but sometimes addresses the Lord and at other times a woman.  But, for the most part, it is well wishing for the king.

Proverbs 22:14
"The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit; he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it."

2 Corinthians 5:11-21
Feeding off of yesterday's reading, Paul continues with the idea that we are not living for the world, but for things promised to come.  So, they should boast about the things they see that are of the Lord.  Paul says, "For the love of Christ controls us..."  Paul regards no one according to the flesh, but tells the people that they have been given a ministry of reconciliation- reconciling the lost to God.  And through Jesus we may become the righteousness of God.

Love and Marriage

I'm back!  Finally, things have slowed down a bit.  There have been some quite big changes happen for me since I last wrote.  I have moved to a new apartment... and I'm a Mrs. now!!!  Last Saturday was the wedding and it was wonderful.  It was simple and Tim and I both enjoyed it very much.  I think most of the people involved enjoyed it, actually, which is what we really wanted most.  The day was great and we have been excited ever since.  We flew off to Chicago for our honeymoon and made a quick trip to Houston after that to visit friends in the states from Romania.  And now, we are at home.  We are trying to get things set up and arranged how we like them.  As I write, I have a husband in the kitchen putting dishes away!

Although I have not been keeping up with the blog, I have been keeping up with my reading.  But I must confess it has been hard to stay focused lately during my reading, so I am eager to be writing down my thoughts again.  I think the main reason for lack of focus has just been so many thoughts swirling around in my head about a million different things.  I am hoping that with the move and the wedding over, my time with the Lord will go back to its meaningful, fulfilling time that I am used to.  I have missed feeling a closeness to the Lord through His word.  So, on that note I begin in Job...

Job 34-36
Let me give some background before getting to today's reading- Job has been confusing me.  I had some ideas of what Job was about.  To put it very shortly, I thought he experienced hardship but was faithful to the Lord.  In the first part of this book, his sons and daughters and flocks die and he is afflicted with bad health.  He has three friends that talk to him a lot and it seemed to me, were advising him to trust in the Lord and were trying to encourage him that all would turn out right.  But he became very angry with them and did not want to hear what they had to say.  Job would acknowledge that God is in control and all powerful, but he would also say that there was  nothing that God would do for him.  Then, a man named Elihu burned with anger toward Job because he "justified himself rather than God."  And today I will find out what Elihu has to say to Job.
Elihu tells Job that he is not greater than God.  He rebukes Job for think the way that he has and tells him that he is not right.  Then he talks about the greatness of God and His abilities and powers.

India-
For many days, I have been reading about India.  The country is so diverse and has hundreds of different people groups.  It was neat to read about all the different aspects of the country, especially since Tim recently went on a mission trip to India.  He was in Delhi and really enjoyed his time out of the country.  The thing that has not ceased to amaze me about India is just how diverse everything is.  Operation World broke the reading up by states in India because they are all so different and there is so much information about each one.  There was everything from fertile land to arid desert, from 1,000 people per square mile to 90 people per square mile, from industrious and prosperous to slums and poverty.  It seems like there are just about as many religions as there are people groups.  Some areas of the country are open to Christianity, and other areas are known for strong persecution of Christianity.  It is still very much a minority, no matter where it is.  Pray for the Christians in India to be strong in their faith and to share the Truth they know with others.

Proverbs 22:10-13
v. 10- "Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out, and quarreling and abuse will cease."  This makes me think of my new neighbors and I'm glad to have scripture to pray for them.

Psalm 44
This psalm was written by children of people who had experienced the Lord first hand and had been told the stories of the great things He did for them.  They believe and follow the Lord, but are being persecuted, so the psalm is a cry for help.

2 Corinthians 4:1-5:10
This portion of Scripture is talking about not losing heart.  Paul is saying that they are speaking the gospel just as it is, without trying to make it more appealing to the world.  He says that God uses us to shine His light in this way.  Then he goes on to talk about being persecuted, afflicted, perplexed, but not defeated.  They speak the gospel anyways, because they know that God can raise the dead and that He has a body and place prepared for them that do not belong to this world.  What courage!!!
